A 72-year-old Virginia man was killed and three people injured in the Lexington Market parking lot around noon Saturday when the driver of a pickup truck lost control and plowed into a crowd, police and fire officials said.

Baltimore City Fire Chief Kevin Cartwright said that a woman driving a white Ford F-150 appeared to have suffered a seizure while driving in the parking lot off North Eutaw Street, causing the truck to strike a group of people. She was treated at University Hospital for a possible seizure. Her female passenger was not hurt, Cartwright said.

Police spokeswoman Detective Nicole Monroe said no charges had been brought against the driver and that her name would not be released.

Monroe said that Donald L. Wheeler, 72, of Colonial Beach, Va., was hit by the truck and pronounced dead at the scene.

Cartwright said the truck came to rest against the metal frame of a doorway at the market and was damaged on the passenger side.

He said that a man who was trapped under the truck was seriously injured and taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Also taken to Shock Trauma was a woman who was found unconscious and not breathing, Cartwright said. A man who sustained a knee injury was being treated at University Hospital, also part of the University of Maryland Medical Center downtown.

Maryland man killed in King George crash

A Maryland tow truck driver was killed yesterday in a two-vehicle crash in King George County.

According to Virginia State Police Trooper A.M. Bowen, who was called to the scene on Dahlgren Road, approximately two miles east of Route 610 or Indiantown Road at about 1:34 p.m., a 1995 International tow truck was traveling west on Route 206 when it crossed the centerline and struck a 1999 Ford F-250 traveling eastbound.

The driver of the tow truck, Ryan O. Robinson, 34, of Montgomery Village, Md., died at the scene. He was not wearing his seat belt, police said.

The driver of the F-250, David L. Warring, 37, of Fredericksburg, was injured in the crash and transported by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital. Warring was released from the hospital.

He was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation

Glen Burnie woman, 73, fatally struck by van in Dundalk

A Glen Burnie woman was fatally struck by a van Tuesday night in Dundalk, according to Baltimore County police.

Audrey Cavanaugh, 73, of the 1700 block of Pleasantville Drive was crossing Wise Avenue near Midway Drive about 8:52 p.m. when she stepped into the path of a 1995 Chevrolet van, said Cpl. Mike Hill, a police spokesman.

Cavanaugh was taken to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the van, Michael Henderson, 58, of the 400 block of Trappe Road in Dundalk, stopped and remained at the scene, Hill said.

Police believe pedestrian error caused the accident, according to Hill.

“At this point, preliminarily, there’s nothing to indicate any charges or wrongdoing on behalf of Mr. Henderson,” he said.

One dead, four injured in crash

One person was killed and four others were injured Monday evening in a two-car crash near the 4000 block of Bill Moxley Road, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said.

At about 7:20 p.m., Frederick County Emergency Communications took a call about a crash involving two sedans, said Lt. Ron Hibbard of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers and personnel found one person dead and four injured, Hibbard said.

One of the cars, a Chevrolet Cavalier, overturned several times and slid down a hill off the western side of the road, Hibbard said.

Jimmy Hawkins, 20, of Damascus, was killed in the crash, Cpl. Jennifer Bailey, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, said. Two passengers in the Cavalier were injured, a 17-year-old from Monrovia and Ashley Caldwell, 19, of Monrovia .

The windshield had been knocked out of the other car, a Chevrolet Corsica, which was visible from the road. It appeared to be damaged on the driver’s side.

James Valentine Jr., 51, and Deborah Valentine, 47, of Mount Airy were the occupants of the Corsica.

All four people injured in the crash were taken to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

Traffic near the scene of the crash was closed as investigators tried to determine the cause of the crash as well as the identities of those involved, Hibbard said.

A 62-year-old Baltimore pedestrian was killed Saturday night after a car struck him and left the scene, according to city police. James Little Jr. of the 4800 block of Lanier Ave. was struck by a 1997 Jeep Cherokee driving northbound in the 4700 block of Greenspring Ave., said Agent Donny Moses, a Baltimore police spokesman. Little was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m.

The driver of the car hit Little after swerving to avoid hitting another vehicle, also driving northbound on Greenspring Avenue, Moses said, and continued heading up the street. Police later caught up with the Jeep, the windshield of which was smashed and stained with blood, in the 4700 block of Pimlico Road.

The driver, a 20-year-old woman, was taken to the Central District station for questioning and a Breathalyzer test. She was later released. Police are waiting for the results of toxicology tests and are continuing the investigation.

Pa. woman killed on Sunday Dec 13,2009 in collision of pickup trucks in White Hall

A Pennsylvania woman was killed early Sunday after the driver of a pickup truck in which she was a passenger lost control on an icy section of Old York Road in White Hall and crashed into another vehicle, according to Maryland State Police at the Bel Air Barracks.

Police said Frank Ferguson Jr., 41, of White Hall, was driving a 2006 Ford pickup truck west on Old York Road near Route 23 (Norrisville Road) about 8:30 a.m. when he crossed the double yellow line in an attempt to pass a 2005 Chevrolet pickup. As Ferguson was passing the other vehicle, his truck skidded on the icy pavement and crashed into the other pickup truck, police said.

Cheryl Christopher, 34, of Stewartstown was killed and Ferguson was thrown from the vehicle. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by ambulance and was reported in critical condition, police said. The other driver was uninjured. The accident remains under investigation.

Cecil County woman killed in collision in Arbutus

A Cecil County woman was killed early Wednesday in Arbutus when her car was broadsided by another vehicle as she tried to make a turn, Baltimore County police said. Gail Gwiazdowski, 58, of North East was driving north on Southwestern Boulevard near Interstate 695 in a Subaru Outback station wagon about 6:25 a.m. when she changed lanes in preparation for a U-turn, police said. As she did so, a Dodge van, also traveling northbound, struck the Subaru in the driver’s door. Gwiazdowski was killed upon impact, according to Cpl. Michael Hill, a department spokesman.

A passenger in the Subaru, Helen Ward, 78, of Glen Park Road in Nottingham, and the driver of the van, Lawrence Murphy, 41, of Haverhill Road in Baltimore, were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment.

Howard man dies of injuries suffered in crash on icy ramp

A 47-year-old Howard County man died Monday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore of injuries suffered in a traffic collision over the weekend on an icy ramp in Ellicott City, according to police. The weather conditions also led to a minor collision between a Howard County police car and an ambulance responding to the scene of the accident, which happened about 9:15 p.m. Saturday.

Police said Nian Chen, 47, of the 3000 block of W. Springs Drive in Ellicott City was driving west on state Route 100 and merging onto U.S. 29 in a 2008 Honda Civic when he lost control of his car on the ramp, spun and crashed into a guardrail. He was standing outside the car when the driver of a 2003 Ford F-350 pickup truck lost control and struck him, according to police.

The Ford then traveled down an embankment adjacent to southbound U.S. 29. The driver of the pickup, Nicholas Pullin, 20, of the 6000 block of Belmont Woods Road in Elkridge, was not injured. A police vehicle arriving on the scene slid into the side of an ambulance that was stopped on the bridge. No one was injured in that collision, police said.

Police identify pedestrian killed by tanker truck

Maryland State Police on Sunday identified the pedestrian killed this weekend after stepping into the path of an Exxon tanker truck as 57-year-old Joseph Mark Scannell, of the 7500 block of Moyer Ave. in Parkville. Scannell died Saturday morning at the accident scene, at Harford Road and Interstate 695. Alcohol was not a factor, according to a corporal from the Golden Ring Barracks.

Man arrested in Columbia hit-and-run

A 24-year-old Columbia man has been arrested in a hit-and-run accident that injured a 16-year-old youth last month.

Paul Russell White III of the 9400 block of Cameldriver Court was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident, negligent driving and failure to drive right of center.

Devin James Carter had been walking with friends on Farewell Road in Columbia on Nov. 22 when a red Honda crossed the double-yellow line and struck him. According to police, the driver of the red Honda drove off, made a U-turn and then drove off again. Carter sustained non-life threatening injuries to his head, legs and torso and was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma.

Witnesses were able to get a partial license plate number and investigators traced the number to White’s vehicle, which was found to have damages consistent with what was described by witnesses. White is in Howard County detention center awaiting a bond hearing.
